| About Producer | Bodegas Ugalde dates back to 1882 in Haro, when it was founded as Bodegas Felipe Ugalde, a family business led by Felipe Ugalde. He saw opportunity at a time when phylloxera was devastating European vineyards and went on to become a founding member of the Syndicate of Exporters of Rioja Wine — the forerunner of today’s Consejo Regulador de Rioja and the Rioja appellation. In the 1940s, the estate was acquired by a Basque business group and renamed Bodegas Ugalde. Substantial investment modernised the cellars with new tanks, barrels, and facilities, and the winery flourished for decades. By the early 1970s, as Rioja’s global reputation grew, Bodegas Ugalde was exporting widely and establishing itself as one of the region’s leading names. In recent years, the winery has achieved widespread acclaim. Most recently, its 2019 Reserva earned 90 points — a silver medal — at both the Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine & Spirit Challenge. |
